People may attack his style or, if they are particularly stupid, they may call him a racist and sexist imperialist oppressor. Regardless, there is a grudging respect that most have for The Lord of the Rings and its place in fantasy.
The only other series I might nominate would be the Narnia series by C.S. Lewis.

Tolkien is about as close as we can get to a genuine Fantasy classic that gets recognized as a marking work even by his detractors.
As for C.S. Lewis, I'm from one of the few cultures that ignored the work completely more or less until the movies came out (a bit before. It's indirectly thanks to JK Rowling, who cited Lewis as an influence though she's ambivalent about the books as an adult, and the fact HP has rekindled interest in English children literature - and to some measure curiosity about a writer and work Pullman hated so much that it finally got the interest of a publisher. Its publication didn't attract much attention, in the end), so I can't really say more than he's a far cry from enjoying Tolkien's popularity/recognition with French readers.
Is there a universally liked fantasy book?

I like The Fionavar Tapestry, but I don't expect everybody does.

That only counts for those who have nostalgic feelings for it, I'm afraid. *NM*

Yes, trying to read it for the first time aged 19 wasn't an enjoyable experience.

More like having your love for it curdle into hate after reading the Mallorean, Elenium & Tamuli

Ha, at least in Mallorean it was a plot point (albeit a lame one)
