I do find statements all over the place like this on parenting sites, though:

Crawling builds on all of the earlier skills of developmental movement. The diagonal movements of crawling and spiral turns show us the action of nerve fibers crossing over between the right brain and left brain. These connections linking the cerebral cortex are vital for language, reading, writing and math. Good communication between the brain hemispheres is essential to all problem solving and complex thinking such as sciences and creative work. Ability to see the whole and the part, and all their relationships, is developed through crawling.


You know you can find *all* kinds of statements on parenting sites... Of course you do, you're a parent. I did do some googling on this topic today and what I did learn is crawling is related to stomach vs. back sleeping. Apparently in US, it's considered unsafe for a baby to sleep on the stomach. However, being on the stomach is likely to lead to crawling. So, you have to weigh the possible risk of stomach sleeping vs. the risks of the baby not getting enough crawling in. And apparently some babies who always sleep on the backs never crawl at all.
