That is Backlog Exceeds Life Expectancy. There are so many books I have to catch up on before I actively start looking for new ones. Not only am I following about two dozen active series, which put out books at random intervals (Hitchiker's Guide just got put back on the list, thank you Eoin Colfer!) but I have a list of "OMG you must read this" books that I will Never be able to get through.

That said, my library has a New Releases section, and while I'm scanning for updates, I make note of interesting Title/Cover combinations. Yes, I'm old fashioned about my reading acquisition.

The other thing I do is buy second hand books. Normally I just do this to complete collections, but sometimes something will strike me, and I happen to LOVE early Sci-Fi. 50's SF is a whole different genre than what we've got today. The old stuff is worth looking at.

I also devour audiobooks. If it's SF and cheap, then I will at the very least look at the back and remember it for the next library trip, and might even buy it, if it's not too egregiously priced.

If you're ok with old new-to-you books, Larry, check out Zach Hughs, Damon Knight, and Thorinnin Gunnarsson's "Starwolves."
