Good lord, I got nothing from that silly quote. BS's quote gave real info and perspective.....and FYI, Alloy of Law was a great, great story.

Go read Tom Clancy is you want to bitch about the amount of description. I skimmed half the pages of his novels, but his stories still kick butt!
From that one paragraph, I got Lolita's young age, height, her legal name, and the fact that the narrator was in love with her and likely had sexual relations with her.
From the Alloy of Law, I got exactly what the paragraph said. I'll read a scientific manuscript when I want dry writing, thank you.
Friendly challenge to Larry and other literary "snobs" on the board.....

I have no problem with BS' dialogue in your example.

Right, but we've already established you don't really care about writing.

Honestly, what % of readers do you think would notice this "problem"?

A high enough percentage that you felt the need to make this post. :p

I would characterize myself as lowbrow with you, but that's one of the things I noticed

Wait, aren't Game of Thrones and A Song of Fire and Ice the same thing?

I've only read one book by him, but The World According to Garp, at least, is a great book. *NM*

I think those shifts are part of the character, not something unintentional

Huh. Lana Del Rey quotes Nabokov... I had not made that connection.

That quote from Lolita sounds like it is from a romance novel with Fabio on the cover.
