I am going to turn to fiction for a while, but after that...

The War of the World - basically a history of the 20th century, looking at why it was so violent and yet had such rapid financial growth.
Empire - A study of the British Empire, making the argument that it did more good than harm
Colossus - a look at America and the effect on the world of it's dominant position
The Cash Nexus - I've not read this one but I've heard it is very good, a history of finance (which is his primary area of knowledge)

Of those ones, I would say War of the World and Cash Nexus are the best two to read.

Robert Graves "There is no money in poetry, but then there is no poetry in money, either."

Henning Mankell "We must defend the open society, because if we start locking our doors, if we let fear decide, the person who committed the act of terror will win"
