Magician is one of my favourite fantasy books. Rebekah Send a noteboard - 18/01/2010 05:27:02 PM
Or, more precisely, the Riftwar Saga is one of my favourite trilogies.

It's a comfort read, I think. There's nothing particularly astounding about it. It's just a good, fun read, nothing heavy.

I love so many of the characters, I love some elements of the world. I like the fact that everything is so recognisable - whether lifted from our world's past or from the usual suspects in fantasy. (And yes, Feist is, in a way, one of the founders of modern fantasy, so some of the cliches were rather newer when he wrote.)

I'm not sure, however, that there's much to discuss in the book. It feels akin to dissecting a film like 2012. It's not meant to be intellectual, it's not meant to make you think. It exists solely to entertain - and it does a very good job of that.
