I'm pretty sure that that criticism can be levelled at many 'popular' genre writers/series.

Especially a lot of those that were popular from the 1980s and early 1990s. Styles, social mores, etc., do change over time after all. That and I've always found fantasy from 80's to be a rather 'dry' period in general in terms of works that have stood the test of time and the genre's willingness to distance itself from Tolkein a little bit.
