I don't actually remember how old I was when I read the book, but it was during high school. I don't in fact hold the book in high regard, and I didn't suggest that to be the case.
It seems we have to disagree about what you did or didn't suggest, then.

You seem to have terribly misread my opinion here. I am not indicating that Magician is one of the Best Fantasy Novels there is. Far from the fact actually. I have merely said that Magician is a good book to read for those interested in 'checking' out the genre. It's indicative. It is better than a lot of its contemporaries, which isn't saying much. It is an easy story to read, with good story telling and capable writing.
I'm not so sure that I have. Especially now that you confirm that you read the book a long time ago and haven't reread it since (or did you just mean you didn't reread it specifically for this book club?). As I wrote elsewhere in the thread, my opinion of the Empire series was fairly high based on my memories of reading it - but it's a lot lower now that I actually reread most of it. Then I don't think it's that unreasonable to suspect you might have a similar experience if you reread Magician, or that if you reread it and still liked it a lot, part of the reason why would be nostalgia, like with Eddings for so many people. I might be underrating the book by saying that, but then, neither of us seems to have read it any time recently.

I do not rate Jordan's work that highly. The man was able to cast a truly remarkable vision and create a very vast world and history. I find his characters to be stiff, conventional, and comprised mostly of cliche actions and sayings. His writing was only rarely concise... history sections and action scenes primarily. His characterization of women and most characters just outside the main PoVs is laughable. I enjoy the series for the grandness of it, but I haven't been able to make myself read the last couple books.
I admit I may have misinterpreted your reply to Myrdhyn as being more critical of WoT than it actually was. A number of times in recent months, you've made similar comments about not thinking WoT is all that great, and perhaps the contrast between that negative tone and your enthusiastic tone about Magician has made me misjudge your comparative views of the two, when in fact the remarks were made in very different contexts and can't be compared.
Of course, I don't rate Magician highly enough to reread it either. It was a very good book for the genre when it came out in the early 1980s, but much has surpassed it since. I do believe that Magician was a direct influence on writers that were to follow
No doubt.
