in that case, you should be wary of the most beautifully written fantasy series of all time

By which I mean "Memory, Sorrow and Thorn" by Tad Williams. Most excellent series, but there are some really darkly mooded scenes, scenes that put you the reader in the same state of mind as the character that it is happening to. At least it did for me.
Yes, they're rather a lot darker, but the plot's better, the writing's better, and the story carries through all three of them, which I like. And at the end there's a real sense of satisfaction at how things turn out.
The really horrible stuff doesn't last all that long.
He pretty much says the same thing. I ought to listen to him since he is almost always right. It just takes so little to throw me into a dark mood though. I have a phobia of those so sometimes I am afraid to read things based on a small part of them.

I didn't feel that way about the Jenny Wurtz books though talking about the Tsurani side of the story. I only got about halfway through the first book and gave it up because it seemed dark and hopeless. What did you think of her books? (I am assuming you read them.)

Death to the Regressives of the GOP and the TeaParty. No mercy for Conservatives. Burn them all at the stake for the hateful satanists they are.

The Empire series is better than Feist by himself, IMO.
