The Hyperion planet plot line in the second novel was a mess. There were some bits to follow and piece together, but a good deal just didn't seem to line up. Of course, the Hyperion plot line in the second novel wasn't really the primary story for the most part.
If you ever get the chance, you should try ILIUM. It's the Iliad/Odyssey meets The Time Traveler, with Shakespeare and Proust for good measure... complete with Trojan war. It's great.
