You would think a Christmas-timed release would work.
Bantam, or possibly Bantam's parent company, was hurt in the recession and it now doesn't have the funds to launch a big book like REPUBLIC in the 2010-11 financial year along with all the other books it has on its slate. In particular, Bantam are already planning a substantial marketing spend for A DANCE WITH DRAGONS and can't afford to handle that and REPUBLIC simultaneously. With Bantam not knowing the precise release date for ADWD (anything from this summer to early 2011), pushing REPUBLIC back to Spring 2011 seems to be their way of handling the situation.
More briefly, Bantam can't afford to publish the book any sooner than 2011, and Gollancz have decided to go with a simultaneous launch out of professional courtesy.
