for missing deadlines or just plain not making deadlines happens to be completed in the same year? Bantam expects both books to sell reasonably well, so it is not a sound financial decision to hold off on a completed book for one that may (but let's be honest here, its Martin so it probably will not) be completed the same year. If the people at Bantam had ANY financial sense, they would pursue a small marketing campaign for Lynch, and use the some of the profit from the sales of his novel towards a future marketing campaign for ADWD. But alas, people just are not intelligent.
The big question is will waiting a bit longer to publish Lynch's book hurt his sales? Probably not. If the two books are published close together, will that hurt Lynch's sales? Very, very likely. So really, Bantam is being smart and doing Lynch a favor. They can set Lynch up for a time in spring when he'll do his very best and even if GRRM doesn't finish for this winter but is ready for spring, its very easy to push his back a few weeks or a month since pretty much no matter when they publish ADWD it will be huge.
