Form the sad pictures I saw I also think it was just a stylized representation of a uniform and not an actual uniform. Even the air force would not wear a silver bowtie, right?. Of course the simple fact that the second man to walk on the moon and one of my greatest boyhood heroes was on dancing with stars is a tragedy of such epic proportions it trumps any simple misuse of a military uniform issues.

Actually it looked like a variant of Air Force Mess Dress to me but I'm quite sure that it was modified and no, silver ties aren't allowed.

Air Force Mess Dress was always kind of strange. I never invested in it and was glad I never had to.
