If I recall corretly, he had also been stripped of his security clearance which meant he was no longer involved in an area of work he had put a huge amount of time and effort into - I imagine that was quite the hammer blow to him. The appalling way the British government treated homosexuals at that time can be blamed, I'm not sure one can identify individual elements to blame.
