Except to do the opposite of what he intended it

Suppose you have two independent clauses conjoined: "I like owlbears, and you like hobgoblins." The comma is necessary, of course.
No. The "and" does the joining bit for you. You can have the comma if it's going to be said with a pause. Doesn't need to be there, though.
The comma in that serves to indicate that the part after it is just a bit of extra information rather than a key part of the sentence and doesn't change the meaning of it. Like saying "The other day I met Bob's wife, Roberta."

Robert Graves "There is no money in poetry, but then there is no poetry in money, either."
Henning Mankell "We must defend the open society, because if we start locking our doors, if we let fear decide, the person who committed the act of terror will win"
Robert Graves "There is no money in poetry, but then there is no poetry in money, either."
Henning Mankell "We must defend the open society, because if we start locking our doors, if we let fear decide, the person who committed the act of terror will win"

I think the first 2 are OK either way, but the third is wrong (essential clause). *NM*

Actually, you don't need the comma in your first sentence.

If a comma is appropriate in the original supposition, then the semicolon is necessary here.

I believe it's treated like one. The comma takes the place of the verb. *NM*
