Certainly we know he even caught his own party off-guard, since they were still in negotiations. And we certainly know that neither the Con or Lib parties had been given the chance to agree any deal.
I think most people knew Labour weren't serious when they sent Ed "PR will happen over my cold, dead body" Balls to negotiate a deal that hinged on PR. Given what has been said since, I don't have any doubt that all the Lib Dems and Labour people who matter knew it was purely for form - Labour had tried to strike a deal to stay in power with their fellow centre left party (as expected) and the Lib Dems had tried a deal with their fellow centre left party.
The comments by his own party also made it very clear that a decent size portion of it would rebel and didn't want a deal. I think that was always going to happen - Labour would rather be in opposition while the Tories make themselves unpopular with cuts.
Of course it is all opinion but I do think everyone involved knew which way the wind was blowing.
