I do realize that the concept of a road has been around for a while. :P Regardless though, the standard "road" in the US is designed for an automobile. It cannot support cars and bikes both efficiently AND safely. The car either slows down to the speed of the bike for the duration of their similar route, or else one of the parties must exit the given roadway. The bike has to go off the road, possibly hitting rocks, holes, etc, or the car must cross the center lane to whatever extent, risking collision with cars on the other side.

Most modern roads are not designed for bikes, and, thus, it's my opinion that bikes shouldn't travel on those.
