The number of issues and people I am expected to vote in rather ridicules. I would much prefer to elect only a limited number of people who I can then hold accountable for the outcome. I want a chance to vote on truly important things but I should not have to vote on a dozen referendums every time I walk into voting booth. Most of the issues I am unqualified to be making decisions on and I have rarely researched them more than reading an excerpt in the paper. Even we I do research them they have typically loaded a bunch of crap I don’t want in there with what I do so if people complain about it later they can hide be the “voters”. I really don't have many dealings with the criminal justice system so how am I supposed to know if some county judge is doing a good job?
I find electing judges entirely ridiculous, and even dangerous because it gives judges a completely inappropriate incentive to start caring about public opinion when handling their cases, at least when an election is approaching.
And perhaps if there were no such referendums on all those things, people would be a bit more careful in how they used their vote for their representatives and senators (and president).
Part of it is also that you just have too many elections, though. A national election every two years is bad enough, but when you add in referendums or state elections during the off years, plus primaries, plus special elections, that's just too much to ask of your responsible citizens.
