Can't find anything now on the context of the second statement. Joel Send a noteboard - 21/08/2010 05:05:51 PM
"'I was not commenting, and I will not comment, on the wisdom of making the decision to put a mosque there,' he said the morning after he commented on the wisdom of making a decision to put a mosque there. 'I was commenting very specifically on the right people have that dates back to our founding. That’s what our country is about.'"

Is that all he said? And what was he asked? Because I keep thinking he must have said much more if people find it confusing. I just haven't had time to look up any kind of transcript.

As you mention, I think it would have been a mistake to give any words for or against the mosque, even just to assuage some people.

Probably because there are too many hits for the first statement when I do a search; best I can do between shifts is a link to the video and transcript of that, and in its entirety the tone is a little less skeptical of the planned mosque.

http://enduringamerica.com/2010/08/15/video-and-transcript-president-obamas-speech-on-the-mosque-at-ground-zero/

It's still a long way from an endorsement or "supporting the mosque" as members of both parties and factions have called it; supporting the right to something isn't supporting the act itself, but part of the Dems problem has been their failure to articulate that combined with the countrys unwillingness to accept it. Too often it seems when people say, "just because you think something is morally wrong doesn't give you the legal right to ban it" what they mean is "just because you think what I'm doing is wrong doesn't make you any less full of it, and the law is on my side. " Of course, the moment the shoe's on the other foot all that noble cerebral logic is out the window; if you want abortion to remain legal, you must fantasize about strangling infants; if you want homosexual marriage to be legal, you must be Liberace back from the dead. I mean, what kind of idiot would support someones RIGHT to do things that disgust him?
