I don't believe I've ever looked God in the eye. In fact, considering how very active his history is, I really don't see much of God at all.
Oh wait he's in the little things right? Or that's "Faith"?
What do you have to show that YOUR mythology is correct...and all the others aren't? A book penned by man isn't going to cut it as proof.
I've looked for faith before, I have. And the harder I look, the more Man I find.

Well just in this little phrase, you are jumping around to several different topics. God's hand in human history? I can point out some things which some claim is God's hand in human history.
Or the "little things"...that isn't faith though. (different topic).
And then the Bible is more than a book "penned by man", as it is a book "penned by man, inspired by God". And we're not talking inspired like an artist is inspired by a waterfall, and writes a poem about it. We're talking hard-core, God-breathed, inspiration....there's a difference.
And as for looking for faith, but seeing man. You already admited up above that you are sceptical about being "sold something". No wonder all you see is man. That's all you're looking for. You aren't looking for God...you're looking to see if someone's trying to pull the theological wool over your eyes.
You say that you like to study. Then do just that. Don't read commentaries. Don't read people's interpretations. Don't listen to what other people think of this subject or that (and yes, not even inter-webs people, including me). Instead, sit down with the Bible (again...a 3rd party/objective publishing house, not something put out by the JW's or LDS's) and read it yourself. If something doesn't make sense, look it up in a reference book. See if there is something else in the Bible which may reference it...or mirror it in some way.
What I'm trying to say is go into it with a mind honestly wanting to know...learn...believe. And honestly want God to show you something amazing. Expect it in fact. And see what happens.
As for how I know that my faith is correct while others are not. The fact that in Christianity, salvation is through faith not works. I have never been one to believe that a good act can "pay back" a bad one. You can't unmurder someone...or unlie to them. You can confess to the wrong, and suffer the consequences...but no good deed can undo that wrong. As such, I can't see someone doing enough to undo a lifetime of wrongs...to such a degree that heaven is possible.
