I don't think your boss did anything wrong. when you answer the phone, you are representing your company. even if YOU think you sound friendly enough to not sound rude only asking "who is this?" or similar, you may be wrong. I sound HORRIBLY depressed over the phone, even though I may be perfectly happy, so I feel comfortable suggesting that you may not sound as friendly as you think you do. You should at least take your boss' comment under consideration instead of blowing off how you might be representing him.
