Other forms of execution for non-roman common criminals were not very usual.
Stoning was from the ancient near east(and the Jews lost their right to execute criminals themselves) and decapitation only for Romans or noblility.
As for what if... well, theologically speaking I don't know, art-history however shows that the cross only became a sybol of christianity in later times (though I'm not at all sure when exactly).
