I can only speak for my kids but for them at least I would say the importance of the toy is over rated. They want it of course but half the time they are bored with it before we even leave the restaurant. If you let my daughter choose where to eat there is only about a 20% chance she will pick McDonalds. She is more likely to pick CCs pizza or Dickey's barbeque (she likes their macaroni and cheese) and neither gives out toys. That could be that we limit her trip there enough that it hasn’t had a big impact her but so far the lure of cheap toys loses to macaroni and cheese pizza and yes it as bad as it sounds.
