Maybe Tim is right and I just can't do it. Köhler sounds like Koo-leh(r), to me.:P

Not to me. At all. But then Tom insists that Dutch "ei" and German "ei" sound the same, so you're in good company? (No, neither has anything to do with ö or oo, it's just another case of an American hearing very strange things in German/Dutch/both that I don't hear at all - I never did manage to determine which of the two "ei"s it was that Tom actually heard, or perhaps he heard something inbetween, not that I can imagine how that would sound.)

Edit: To clarify, I'm only talking about the vowel part here - I agree about the R being not really audible, that's a recurring thing at the end of words in German.

What does 'ei' sound like in Dutch? 'ei' in German sounds exactly like 'I' the pronoun in English. Like in Einstein.
