It'd be interesting if they discovered that something extraterrestrial like, oh, a meteor bit, landed in that pond at some point. Maybe it wasn't ON that meteroid, but maybe the composition of that meteroid allowed it to evolve this way?

Either way, I'm sure interesting interesting things could ensue :D
