Because I would argue the more heinous and act we are charging someone with the more we need to ensure they have adequate defense. I am not comfortable with the idea that I can get a great law if I accused of tax fraud but I am going to get poor defense if I am accused of murder and I am being threatened with the death penalty.
I think it would be EVIL to deny someone legal defense solely by the heinousness of the crime they are being accused of.
I think it would be EVIL to deny someone legal defense solely by the heinousness of the crime they are being accused of.
But I am somehow more comfortable with a sleazy lawyer who defends mafia bosses simply for the money, than an attorney who hunts out these types of cases out of some twisted sense of principle.
I envisage a world where you defend those whose causes you share, and not out of some questionable sense of duty. If no lawyer believes you innocent, well, then you just have to defend yourself.
In other words, if your actions are so heinous that no one in your community wants to identify with you, well then you're sh*t out of luck. Maybe you shouldn't have shot down 6 people in cold blood then.
I wouldn't mourn a return to the village / town based society of a previous age where you were judged by a respected group of local elders. In the vast majority of cases, this brought about swift, accurate justice.
A week and this guy would have been swinging from a tree.
What motivates someone to pull out all the stops defending the Arizona shooter in court?
