All the talk about cut blocking being the same as chop blocking. Joel Send a noteboard - 08/02/2011 03:02:38 PM
Which really demonstrates nothing more than either a poor grasp of the rule book or denial of reality, take your pick. I heard it less from Packers fans than from traditonal Broncos rivals, but I heard it from them, too. It's not that Denver had one of the all time great offensive lines (that furnished the teams first HoFer to date) any more than ANOTHER of the all time great offensive lines earned Dallas the '95 NFC Championship (what a great time to be a Cowboys fan in Milwaukee.... :)) When you lose your opponents must've cheated, and when you win it's time to predict 16-0 before next season even starts. That's a combination that produces annoying losers and insufferable winners.
I am either friends of or related to some pretty hardcore GB fans, I remember that game, and I remember the perfect storm of a highly talented Denver squad FINALLY actually doing something with Elway's talent. We couldn't execute with the folks we had on the field, and Denver did.

The main things I remember are the Helicopter tackle, the always breathtaking Terrell Davis running (his stats actually got BETTER the deeper Denver went into the playoffs, and his career playoff numbers are still unmatched) and the Eddie Mac pancake block on a linebacker fifty pounds heavier that set up 1st and G on the game winning TD. That, and Davis leaving the game in the first quarter because of a migraine that left him blind, only to return, still blind, to fake a run to the left at the goal line that drew the entire Packers D after him while Elway scampered right and into the end zone.
The job of the offense is to move the ball and score. If you do that, no one cares how you did it. If you lose, the fact that you ran a certain offense won't cushion the blow. I would have been just as happy to have won yesterday with Packer Sweep after Packer Sweep. As is, I'm liking the WCO. I'm liking our dominating defense. Given we're the Super Bowl champs, there isn't a whole lot about our team to dislike save the fact that they aren't your team.

Your running game is pretty dismal, man. I wouldn't get to used to it either; one of these days the Competition Committee is going to start asking itself some hard questions. Like

Do we really believe that the best QBs of the past 90 years all happen to be playing RIGHT NOW?

Is it reasonable that in a SB between two premiere defences the LOSER scored 25 points?

Does it really make sense that the SB Champs, despite being a wildcard team, only had 100 rushing yards in ONE post season game?

Have we maybe made things a BIT too easy for offenses, especially passers and receivers?

It sells tickets and ads, but the players, coaches and refs who make the rules aren't going to be satisfied with it for long, IMHO. I'm an offensively and passing minded guy, but this business of wrapping QBs in foam so that you can't hit 'em low, can't hit 'em high, can't hit 'em hard and can't allow your helmet to touch anyone, while receivers are practically illegal to even look at it until well after they've made a catch, is a temporary aberration. At least, I hope it is, or it'll become impossible to deny the charges that the NFL is "armor plated sissyball".
