I don't know people who name their child one thing withthe express intention of giving him/her a nickname. Sometimes the name chosen allows foe a variety of nicknames: Elizabeth can be Liz, Lizzy, Beth, etc.

Because if they aren't according to you, perhaps you should clarify as I'm clearly not understanding you then.
All of my friends call me Gabe, but I'm exclusively Gabriel in professional and formal settings. Oddly enough, my parents refer to me as both. Your characterization of diminutives is weird. :P

Nor am I sure how this example contradicts anything of what I said...
That said, two of my good friends are a Samuel and a Benjamin who have never been anything other than Sam and Ben in their lives.
