It is a fairly common practice in a lot of the south. One of our friends named their son James Anthony but always planned on calling him JT. Of course they are from OK so what do you expect:). I have always used my middle name instead of my first name but I am not sure if that was just planned or because my mom never liked the uncle my dad named me after.
