Of course when running for president the candidates get enough media attention that this is a fairly pointless formality, but in lower-profile races, it seems sensible enough, so I don't really see the harm in making that requirement universal.
Oh, utterly pointless and totally political, but not a sweeping Birther endorsement either, just someone's pet bitch fit hitting the floor and voting against it could cost some votes while voting for it can be explained away as "Well, we really ought to have that, dontcha think?" State legislatures pass nonsense and crap all the time anyway, it's illegal to tease skunks in Minnesota and in Ohio we have a law the bans hunting whales on Sundays... we do actually have whales in Ohio, at Sea World, and I guess they're out of luck Monday through Saturday. Montana just passed a law legalizing hunting with a spear, which I guess is a very important issue, sounds crazy but of course if someone puts it forward its kinda hard to justify voting against it, been a lot of that of late, but state legislatures have never exactly been a bastion of A-list statesmen and competence anyway, which is part of the reason why the national media generally ignores them, but they've been in love with AZ's leg recently.
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
