I am a snob, aren't I?

I don't know. I think what would bother me is that he'll most likely be the type of person who believes the bible 100% and doesn't understand that there are different interpretations to things. How can he have learned to be open-minded if he never even tried to read other sources/opinions?

I'm curious how you get that extrapolation, all I got was "Man does not enjoy reading for recreation, is religious, reads his holy book" and your comment sounds an awful lot like "Those thespians are a vile pack of sodomites, almost as bad as those sick pedagogues"

And you say I extrapolated?:P

;) I usually find you get a lot further in pointing out stuff if you use extreme cases, but their was a strong hint of that flavor in what you said, hint, not certainty. I also never miss a chance to drop that Thespian/Pedagogue line, but I stand by it, it really seems you're jumping to some conclusions and doing it with bad info too.

No, my point is that there are people (my brother) who have made comments like: "I don't need to read other interpretations - that just muddies the water. The information I need to know is Written for me." I capitalized the w, but the intent was pretty obvious. He isn't crazy, and the way he said it wasn't crazy; however, it is unacceptable to me. I think it is crazy, but that's because I believe that things you read should either have no effect or make your faith ultimately stronger, or you might want to question where you stand in the first place.

Yes, we've all dealt with people who can capitalize words while speaking, neat trick, but it can be irritating. Still, this actual behavior is absurdly common in people on things other than Jesus ya know. Most people I know when talking about science or politics have a very 'skimmed the Cliff Notes' approach and of the remainder they have this one book that 'totally changed their life' like Marx or Ayn Rand or Dawkins or one of our modern political talking heads. Same stuff, same behavior, drives me batshit to the point I wish they hadn't even read that. Keep in mind though that there is a big difference between, "I don't really read much, well, the Bible, I read that" and "The Bible is His Holy Word, Written with Perfect Accuracy and His Literal Truth, every word, no other work will foul my mind with is vile heatheness". I know a lot of people who would qualify as Biblical Literalists, they tend to be heavy readers with groaning bookshelves and quite a few have non-Chrisitan religious works, I imagine I bias to brainiac in all my associations so I doubt they are the norm, but your brother probably isn't either and you should not take single people, particularly blood relations, as examples of groups.

I didn't say he absolutely was that way, I just said that that would be my worry. Even if he hasn't avoided other writings, it seems odd to me that someone would specifically say he doesn't read much. Just a strange way to identify oneself.

What, honestly? Yeah on a dating site that probably is weird. Us bookworms are a small minority, even among smart people. There's a rather famous poll that found only about half of the pop read 1 book or more a year, and found 2 out of 3 people read the bible or other religious book, which pretty much makes the dude normal. One or more a year. But hell, let's be honest ourselves, while most of us bookworms place books themselves on a very high tier, in terms of data transmission to reader their big advantage over TV and radio is they are a lot cheaper to make for distribution. Your average fiction book isn't exactly deep and profound (Twilight comes to mind) and reading a history book in 13 hours as opposed to watching a 13-episode TV series on the subject is actually probably going to get you less info and understanding, way lot cheaper to make though. Let us not be bookists, if you would, and assume that it is the specific action of reading books, as opposed to the desire for knowledge, that is an admirable quality. And where fiction is involved, it really amounts to no more than a preference over TV, newspapers, or magazines, maybe indicates better imagination but I'm leery of even saying that.
