Re: Exactly. Gaps Send a noteboard - 21/04/2011 01:01:00 PM
Yes, that’s exactly what I meant – and your qualifier was also what I meant when I said I recognized the comment wasn’t perfect. But for instance: this person does what you referenced, sort of comments on how they’re a philosophy major, and then talks about how all they read is for their philosophy course, and that those are the books they’re interested in, etc. There’s something boring about that, right? For instance, you have no reason to have read all the books you’ve read having been an engineering major, and that’s interesting. I recognize that it’s a level of pretentiousness from my perspective, too, but I kind of like those girls who’ve read awesome stuff without having had to do it for a class or a test.

As far as Heller, you didn’t miss out on anything, and his subsequent books could never quite get up to snuff. I also read all the Ender’s stuff, and loved it, but I don’t remember if I read anything else by Card.

I sort of agree with your comment on authors, but that’s sort of difficult, too. I mean, I have so many things that I want to read, that sometimes – even if I love a book – I won’t pick something else up by the same author right away, or perhaps not at all. For instance, Lionel Shriver – I really did love “Game Control” (or whatever it is) but I haven’t read anything else by her, even though I’d love to. Sort of a time thing. Same thing with Peter Handke (though I’ve read some of his poetry, where it exists).

So I mostly agree with that comment, but I think professional life sort of impacts it, as well.
I cannot even copy his manner because the manner of his prose was the manner of his thinking and that was a dazzling succession of gaps; and you cannot ape a gap because you are bound to fill it in somehow or other -- and blot it out in the process. -- Nabokov
