I thought it especially illustrative because the thing I really disliked about him was that I always felt he made an effort to not make an effort to know the facts so he could truthfully say he didn't know better. That's just my subjective opinion, and there are plenty of other examples from both parties. Politicians from both parties seem to have routinely done it during Vietnam, accepting DoD reports at face value because they didn't want to confront the hard questions looking deeper would prompt.
