Since I work, I'll have to keep him in the crate then, and at night, and let him out in the evenings when I'm home and watch him. It still sounds kind of cruel, but it's better than putting him down.
Thankfully, he has a really little voice, so if he meows a lot he should be fairly easy to tune out. Not like my other cat, who if he's unhappy, the entire block knows about it
