... you are applying an awfully broad brush to what is a very diverse group with equally diverse situations.
Living within your means is definitely good advice and something everyone should live by, poor or middle class or anyone. But I'm pretty sure there are a lot of poor people who live within their means and still struggle, people who can't simply "apply themselves" and make everything better. Some of them made poor choices, maybe. Some of them just had plain old bad luck. Some of them were forced into situations where they couldn't get ahead.
I mean, I'm glad that you managed to get ahead of the game through hard work. You deserve it. But I don't think you should assume it works the same way for absolutely everyone. There are long odds stacked against some people.
I assume you are talking about handicapped people or people needing temporary assistance. We, as a society in America, have decided we will help these people. But what percentage of these people make up the poor? Compared to the people who simply don't apply themselves or have made bad choices? A small form of socialism is fine. But let's not go full out socialism. Not exactly the idea this country was founded. "Go apply yourselves, citizens. The rest of us sure are grateful for your money. Keep up the hard work."
