What if everyone really did try their hardest? Nate Send a noteboard - 24/08/2011 03:38:39 AM
.....that is the most selfish reason to ever have kids. It's call personal responsibility. Why should our expectations and standards be any less for poor people? Demand the best and most will rise to the occasion and succeed just like you did.

GWB was a joke in many ways, but he was right that "low expectations" is nothing other than bigotry.

Kind of a tangent, but the thought occurred to me. What if everyone really did apply themselves fully, worked their way up, got an education?

Would there be enough decent-paying jobs for all of them? Or would there be a ton of motivated, educated people working at Wal-Mart and McDonalds? Would there be enough jobs for them all, or would at least five percent of these 300 million* motivated, educated people be stuck on the unemployment list because there just weren't positions available?

*I know the actual number of age 18-65 Americans isn't 300 million, but it's the number I associate with the US population. Whatever number it really is, just plug it in.
