What makes you think that fat shaming is effective in making fat people lose weight?

It's tempting to say, oh a woman that's told that it's ok to look what she looks like is going to gorge herself on junk food. And when she's told she's hideously fat she won't? You, Tom, do not think that you're fat. Does that inspire you to eat the whole bucket of ice cream?
By the way, I keep saying woman because regardless of actual obesity rates it is women that bear the brunt of the fat shaming. Personally my belief is that the obsession with women's weight gives many women eating disorders and kind of pushes them into extremes- whether it's to be super thin or super fat.
Food isn't alcohol or drugs- you can't quit food cold turkey. You have to eat food for the rest of your life. If someone has a messed up relationship with food that's full of guilt, shame, and hate, then that's a problem!

I was not trying to be harsh and honestly, I still don't think I was and am not in any way apologizing for what I said. My point was that the language that is currently being used is obscuring reality in the name of political correctness and a societal move to attempt to say, "There is NOTHING wrong with being fat 'plus-sized' ". The reality is that there is. It's very bad for one's health.
I understand what you're saying. You're saying that you are struggling with weight problems and starting to have some success. I think it's great that you're working on it and, although maybe you feel bad now, that negative feeling can be used to get you motivated to change. Success will improve your health, both physical and mental.
What I am saying is that this new marketing effort is attempting to help everyone who is struggling with a diet get complacent. Instead of saying, "Go to a doctor, find out what a healthy weight is for your frame and height and try to stay within that range", it's essentially saying, "Go ahead and eat the whole bucket of ice cream. Be happy. You're just 'plus-size' and that's great". Don't you think that's bad?
You yourself just said that eating has been like an addiction. This is very true. Many people eat in addictive ways. They are trying to cope with problems with food. If they were doing that with alcohol and drugs, we would immediately say that they should go to get help, and we used to say the same with respect to food. However, this isn't saying that.
To re-phrase that, would you like to see an ad saying, "You chose heroin because life is just that stressful"?

Would not having a well fitting bikini top make her magically lose weight?

I protest the "I'm okay, you're okay" drivel inherent in the statement "plus-size".

I get that. But that's not what they say. And it's not just an advertising campaign.

They have to over emphasize that it's ok precisely because society keeps saying that it's not
