Re: Grammar junkies Dark Knight Send a noteboard - 05/10/2011 08:49:43 PM
1. Does anybody (besides me) use proper grammar when texting, posting on Facebook, etc.?

I am sure there are other uptight grammar nerd who do the same and I am sure some of them post here.

2. Do you correct somebody who uses incorrect grammar while talking? If not, do you at least do it in your head?

Typically adults take offense to being corrected by people who think they know better, even if they do. Same goes for history and science and politics ect.

I know this because I have annoyed people by correcting them, not typically in grammar but I doubt people take being corrected on verb usage any better than they do on historical facts. If they actually cared they would have taken the time to learn, it isn't really that hard.

3. Do you wince whenever you read a particularly awful Facebook post?

I worry more about the logic behind the thought than the grammar behind it.

4. Have you noticed a trend on Facebook where people don't even bother using periods to separate sentences anymore?

The problem with all the uptight grammar Nazis in there failure to understand the difference between formal and informal communication. Just because it is being written doesn't mean it should be held to a higher standard than other forms of informal communication. Like words spelling and grammar have become part of the slang with people misuses them initially.

This may be true but not in regards to run-on sentences. Reading them is very difficult because you have to sift out the separate thoughts. It's very annoying.

5. Have you noticed misspelled words that have nothing to do with 140 character length? (Today I saw somebody spell "do" as "dew";)

have you noticed the people use the word bad to mean something that is good? it is called slang.

6. (Off topic) Are people whiny bitches on Facebook or what?

I guess it depends on your friend list. I have a bigger problem with people who seem to wish the worked for Hallmark.

7. Has anybody ever called you a Grammar Nazi?

no

8. Has Twitter and texting eroded proper grammar for today's youths?

What make you believe they had it before?

9. Have you succumbed to the 140 character shortcuts? How often do you text or tweet this way?

I don't tweet and only text to my wife. Since I use swype my spelling in my text is probably better than my post:P As far as my grammar in text it is about the same as when I talk to her. Maybe a little worse since some grammar moistakes or simply typing mistakes and not ones I would make when speaking. Overall though I don't worry about if me or I comes first but I also don't use double negatives.

10. Were there any grammatical mistakes in this survey?

Didn't bother looking. Once you get beyond the basics most grammars rules are just so lit majors have something to feel superior about, god knows they need something. Strict grammar rules are a misguided attempt to stagnate and control something as complicated a regional as human language. Why should people talk in away that seems unnatural to them? BEcause some uptight college professors say they should? If I am not writing a paper for them to grade I really could careless what they think. For eltist tingle of sounding wel educated? I guess that works for those simple enough to be impressed by how you said something and not what you said. A well worded phrase is great but that has more to do with style than grammar. Why is a word like ain't which has been around for hundreds of years and is used daily by tens of millions people still not considered a word? Becaue the grammar kings decided it ain't.
