He made a mistake, and then you tried to figure out a way it wasn't a mistake. He then claimed this was his intent all along.

That I understood his meaning makes his usage no less mistaken, only makes me equally mistaken for thinking the two nouns in the subject could be treated as a single entity. Again, that is not an error in subject/verb agreement, per see, but an error in stating the subject.
