"Right" (or "grammatical," if you prefer) does not seem an option since you essentially argue the rule in all other cases should be replaced for a single word just for the heck of it. I understand it is popular, but so is the phenomenon Camilla referenced of replacing "'ve" with "of." That makes it a popular error, not grammatically correct.
I didn't even read all that, but obviously I could argue till I'm blue in the face and you'd persist. I give up on you as impossible, crazy, and ungrammatical.

However, I have yet to see any reason to drop the apostrophe from "its"--and ONLY "its"--save "'cos I wanna." You wanna do that, I don' wanna; fair enough then.
