If you're looking at home-made preserves vs. honey, they probably are pretty damned similar.

...as an example of a mass-market range of options (since I'm near Orrville, they're a pretty popular choice). Their jam/jelly/preserves all have in the neighborhood of 50-60 cals per tablespoon, which is around where honey is if I'm not mistaken. The exception is their low sugar line which has around half that. I was surprised because my initial assumption would have been the same as yours.
I've never made a PB&H but I'd assume the honey would go a longer way than a fruit spread, so I do assume there'd be a calorie savings there. I don't know though. And honey certainly wins as the more natural, minimally processed choice that's cheap and easy to obtain.
