That concept has been around since the inception of the corporation and is vital to its ability to sue and be sued in court. If it weren't a "person" it wouldn't have standing, couldn't defend its rights. It also couldn't be taxed, by the way. The concept of "legal person" includes corporations, limited liability companies, partnerships, trusts, estates, joint ventures and political entities.

It seems clear from the context that his problem was with people who want to stretch legal personhood (if that's even a term) into absurdities like freedom of speech for companies, which leads to the recent decisions striking down limitations on campaign donations from companies.
