Typical "sweets" gift to bring to a Christmas celebration in the US would be plate of cookies or other home-made sweets. My favorite are bourbon balls, peanut butter balls dipped in chocolate (AKA Buck eye balls), iced sugar cookies, shortbread thumbprints with raspberry jam filling, and gingerbread men. Some people go crazy making gingerbread houses with their kids, or give them as gifts. I'm not sure, but I think that this may be old-fashioned. I live in a rural area where lots of people still so this sort of thing, but increasingly in recent years, a lot of people buy the horrid overly-sweet iced cardboard-tasting shit that they made in bakery sections at grocery stores. :dead: However, some people I know who rarely bake cookies the rest of the year will whip up some family cookie recipe at christmas time.

There is a cookie that my mother-in-law makes that reminds me of fruit cake with maraschino cherries, whatever spices are in it, and other fruit bits that are quite tasty. She calls them "Lizzies".
