It was totally unexpected. I told my husband not to spend much money on me this year because we need to do more rennovations on the house, and I need another hearing aid. (Rather, I need to pay for the one I've been testing out.) Copay for that is $1500. He knew I wanted an ipad, I use his all the time. I never asked for one. I cried. :P


My sister got an ipad too, but I don't think she cried. She did rant though :P. That's a great example- this present is not any less of a present just because there was no mystery over whether you would like it or not.


...look how much happier and more excited she was to receive it without having asked for it :P

Okay, I'm only playing devil's advocate here. I think it's a personal choice. I'd rather somebody put some thought into a present for me and get me something they think I'd like, instead of just giving me the ability to buy something for myself (like with a gift card) or buying me something I specifically asked for. And yeah, sometimes that means they get it wrong ;) but I'm okay with that. There are other people who'd rather be able to be more prescriptive/selective, and that's fine too if that's their preference. I think the key is like you said, you base this on your knowledge of the other person and not what you'd prefer. This is actually something I had to work to overcome. I kind of hate getting gift cards (from family/close friends) and so I used to not give them either, but there are people who love getting them so I should care more about that than my own feelings on the matter.
