When I first read it, I had a moment of grave pause in which I considered the possibility that I had been poisoning myself for years by not washing my eggs, and that I would go to the hospital and the doctors and nurses would stare at me in disbelief that I could not know such a thing. But then I remembered that my mother never washed eggs when I was growing up either. So now I just don't know.


Definitely don't worry about it if the egg is going to be cooked. Cooking is what kills the bacteria. I don't actually know how lemon meringue pie is prepared but in my brain it's possible that the egg isn't fully cooked and the image of you picking out egg shells from the bowl is what prompted me to mention egg washing. I could still be wrong though.
