Seriously, I got money from my parents to "spend on something impractical" to avoid me just dumping it into savings or something. My brother and sister and I have an agreement that we only buy gifts for each others' children, and my wife insists on exchanging presents on New Year's Eve in the Russian fashion so I haven't gotten anything from her yet (or given her the diamond earrings I got her).


There was a transition period but we did switch to celebrating with family on christmas because we want to go to parties for New Year's... This christmas my parents hosted a party (~20 guests). There was a whole lot of food and alcohol and russian karaoke. There was a very spirited rendition of Ochi Chernuye which my sister managed to get on video (not that it will ever be shared on the internet). Lots of other songs too. My sister and I had the job of picking out fun songs and we did great. I even found my parents' favorites: 'perelyotnuye ptitsu' and 'ne sup mne sol na ranu'.
