... are you angrier at her because she turned out to be pro-life, or some other fairly common viewpoint you don't happen to share, or because she said something really freaky akin to attending a friends dinner party and finding they've got a copy of Mein Kampf and Birth of a Nation lying around?

I can't imagine being angry at anyone for being pro-life. That just seems silly. What I am angry about is that there are other opinions out there, I hold one, and I don't appreciate being treated as though my (carefully thought through, I might add) stance consists of: "it's ok to murder babies."

Well I sympathize, I've never cared for people implying I want to enslave or oppress women and hold this view by dint of being an ignorant religious zealot, which was especially irritating since I was pro-life even when I was a committed atheist. I'm also not terribly fond of some of the things that were directed at those of us involved in the Iraqi occupation. The 'M word' is never pleasant.

If I had to guess though I'd say you're probably more ticked that you took the time to explain your stance to someone you knew and came away feeling that not only did you not sway them to your POV but that you didn't sway them to having more respect for your POV. That also sucks, been there, done that. Problem being that you can either write the person off, try again, or simply ignore it. And there really is no right or correct path on that score.

I'm mostly angry because I just spent a lot of time telling her exactly why I think what I do and that I have valid reasons. I never expected to change her mind, but I do expect her to either respect that I can have my opinion or leave me alone about it. And she didn't do either.

Well I more or less agree with you but there is a school of thought that if you think someone you like is doing something bad, or holds a flawed morality, you should try to help them even if it endangers your friendship. It's vaguely possible this is your friend's attitude on the matter. Assuming you don't want to just terminate the friendship you might want to try something very direct like "You're my friend, and I think we should avoid this topic or we'll endanger that friendship."
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.
