Looks that way; sorry. Joel Send a noteboard - 14/06/2012 12:47:16 AM
Currently Facebook, Twitter etc. are riding the crest of a wave and becoming all pervasive without people thinking through the results, my feeling is that we might well see a clear adverse reaction to that as people realise the full implications of recording so much of their private lives and thoughts on the internet.

I did not realize you meant a cautious decline in use rather than resentment for creating a record of peoples casual, asinine and public comments. I would not expect much of that kind of backlash either though, only more of that caution during continued use. More prominence and permanence will not deter people advocating their deepest positions, only encourage them to measure their words more carefully (again, I can only hope it does the latter.) It will only marginally affect FBs purely social aspects, as people tune out the most strident members. *shuffles feet nervously*

Pardon the tautology, but time will tell how things develop. I have already seen articles claiming the most active parts of FB are the political ones, speculating on the site becoming a true political forum and campaign resource much as Twitter was styled the Arab Springs network. My own recent experience with the US Constitution group "Generation Opportunity" is a good example of that. Turns out GO is more like GOP, an activist and recruitment organization created by ex-staffers (and one polling company exec) for senior Bush administration members. When speaking with journalists and legislators, GO already references large membership in its FB groups as evidence of growing support for the GOP agenda. Never mind that the Constitution group has at least three threads a day that go something like "I just joined this group because I love the Constitution, but now realize it is just an excuse for Obama-bashing and am leaving." "Too soon to tell" is usually, as Calvin Trillin noted in a book with that title, Politician for "I have no idea," but this looks like one of many cases where it applies.
