Those for the traditional definition of marriage are too often painted as "hate filled" or driven by hate. People use those types of labels to dehumanize their opponents.
Rather than just saying their faith-influenced political positions are stupid, wrong, uninformed, etc., bad intentions must also be assigned. Hence they are labeled as hate filled bigots. The word "hate" is almost always used by proponents of gay marriage to describe the motivation of those who oppose it. They are hate filled, their agenda is hate based, etc. These are the dehumanizing labels used so that you are no longer just opposing other humans with a very different view-point, but monsters driven by their unbridled hatred. Or in some cases, the attributes of the very worst of your opponents are given to all of your opponents, even if the vast majority are not in fact "filled with hate" or "driven by hate".
