It is a genric term. The navy is full of such terms, and of course the Marines use them as well.
A single bed can be called a rack or it could be four high beds on an old crew ship. The only time I have seen military personal forced to sleep side by side is in filed sleeping in half shelters (which is a tent where two guys both carry half of tent). Even then most guys just used there tent half as ground cover and slept on top. Not sure if they even use them anymore.

God, I hate half-shelters. No, there basically out, usually if you have to camp out you do it in a larger tent and cram everyone in it, side by side, on the ground in the bags - those are nice bags - they routinely do this for a week or more in the new basic training setup. We still do the large room full of bunks or cots all the time too. I started off in self-propelled artillery, we all slept in our vehicles, and that was side by side too.
The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant. We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.

As I understand it, there are very good reasons why they don't let women on submarines.

Your comparison to segregation is idiotic. I won't even give such a stupid claim a second thought. *NM*
